While imprisonment alone has not proven effective in stemming crime or keeping people from re-offending, experience shows that if an offender maintains a positive family environment, and has the skills to be successful in that environment, the chances of recidivism diminishes.

Domestic Violence Offender Services

Domestic violence is a serious problem in Connecticut. Estimates show that at least one out of every ten women is abused by a man. One way to stop violence is to intervene with men who batter. Programs that hold men accountable for their controlling, abusive and violent behaviors help to keep women safe in their homes and communities.

Family Ties

The stress on a child when a parent is imprisoned has been compared to the death of a loved one. While society understands and accepts the mourning that accompanies death, imprisonment carries a social stigma. Because the offender has committed a criminal act, family members including innocent children, also suffer.

Family Time

Correctional experts recognize that visits from loved ones diminishes the effects of institutionalization, improves inmate behavior and creates an incentive to participate in rehabilitative services. However, traditional visitation is not effective for offenders to maintain their relationships when serving long sentences.
